STARTING A BUSINESS

Journey By Massage

Hi, my name is Cheryl Stewart - Owner of "Journey By Massage"

I knew I always wanted to do something to help people, but wasn't sure what direction to go. I've been told by many to get into massage, and that I was a natural at it! So once I decided to go that way, everything just fell into place. Courses that were once so far away were all of sudden at my fingertips. So I went for it! Then one day, I walked into The Work Zone, not knowing what they were about, decided to check them out and see what they did! I guess you can say that I am a firm believer, if it’s meant to be, everything really does fall into place! Usually if it sounds too good to be true, beware! But I took that chance and glad I did as it’s helped me get to whereI am today.

Journey by MassageThe Progressive Program pays you for the first year of your business. You can use the money however you choose, but please use it wisely. You are committed to write a report every month on how your business progresses. A small price to pay for the benefits you receive

ACI Computer Services

"Starting a business is at the same time one of the most trying and rewarding things you will ever do. It will take you from the depths of despair to the height of adulation and back again, often in a single day. I don’t recommend it for the faint of heart, but if you have a good idea, thick skin, and the will power to make something happen, you could also enjoy the freedom and sense of accomplishment that comes with running your own business."

Originally from Kamloops, BC, Michael Jacques has been a resident of Burns Lake for nearly 15 years. He was fascinated by computers from an early age and took all the relevant courses possible in High School. After graduating he mainly worked in the service industry while saving up the money to obtain his first computer related certificate. Michael now holds four certificates from the Computing Technology Industry Association, and is currently working on his Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) exams. Michael started ACI Computer Service on March 31st, 2008 thanks to the help and support of the staff at Progressive Employment Services Ltd.

Extras:
-ACI Computer Service started operations a day earlier then expected (March 31st) to avoid any confusion that might have been cause by opening on April Fool’s Day.
ACI stands for Accessibility, Confidentiality, and Integrity, which are the three cornerstones of computerized network security.
-The original name for the company was intended to be Integra Computer Service, but this was rejected after Michael found out it was the name under which the Honda Acura is sold outside North America. That and the name had already been taken by someone else.

Success in Attaining Employment!

Levi Marks and Dylan Kosie are former clients of The Work Zone.  They registered with the Active Counselling for Employment Project Levi and Dylan(Employment Assistance Services) to explore the best route to employment.

By working with an Employment Consultant (EC), it was determined that a lack of certifiable skills was the major barrier to employment.  Levi and Dylan worked separately with their respective EC, completed the steps necessary to determine the best route to employment, completed the Labour Market Information that supported their goals and were then referred to the Skills Development and Economic Benefits Program with Transitions in Prince George.

Both were successful in negotiating training and living supports and gained the funding supports for Entry Level Carpentry training.  They ended up as classmates. As these photographs reveal, a lot of the training was “hands-on”.  Both Levi and Dylan are now gainfully employed as carpenters and excited about what the future holds for them!

They are fine examples of some of the full circle routes to employment that are possible through working with us at The Work Zone. From un-employment to employment! Great going Guys!

Shuttle Service

William Pierre’s Shuttle Service. He provides shuttle services to the people from the Tache Reservation to Fort St. James.  It is about a 45 minute drive and many people who live in Tache do not have vehicles

I was in between jobs and frustrated about finding myself there several times over three years in a row. Every job I tried was leaving me feeling empty and stressed out about long hours and situations I had little control over. While on employment insurance, I walked into Progressive Employment looking for help and possibly a new career. I was tired of my old jobs and wanted something new. The staff at PESL were very helpful in providing me with options towards my new goal....a different career. I had been this route before exploring different careers or training options that could fit with what I already knew how to do... drive truck. I wasn't satisfied with any of the similar vocation options that were available and decided to go in an entirely different direction.

 VIP Program Success

I had a desire to help people more directly and also be my own boss. I presented the staff at PESL with my idea of becoming a massage therapist. At first they were hesitant because it didn't fit with my profile as a truck driver but I was determined to see this through even if I had to do it alone. I believe it was my determination that convinced them to support me for which I am forever grateful.(I was crossing my fingers) It was a lot of hard work and countless hours but here I am today with a diploma in massage therapy and designation as a Registered Massage Therapist. As I look back on events that led me here, I know that without the help of Progressive Employment, I would not have been able to take the training necessary to become an R.M.T. Their support enabled me to take control of my future and make necessary changes that have brought joy and contentment like I have never known. I am glad that the staff believed in me and gave me a chance to become what I am today. I highly recommend their services and encourage anyone who is serious about employment change and is willing to work hard for it to give them a call.
